Scout is still a vegan.

Have you ever gotten home from the supermarket to find something in one of your bags that you did not buy? Well, maybe you bought it but you didn’t know it. Maybe someone accidentally put something in your cart, maybe it was at the check out counter. That’s what happened to me today with the roasted garlic hummus. Scout is away at school and I had just removed any evidence of hummus from the fridge. And there it was. I think it was a sign.
Scout has been a vegan now for exactly thirty days. Scout will really like this next line. And I was wrong. I gave it 48 hours. 72 max. So not only was I wrong but I am also impressed.
But here’s what makes it really impressive. Scout the vegan came home from school this past weekend . She arrived home Friday night to a dinner thoughtfully prepared with a vegan in mind and then she and Andrew (”the boyfriend”) headed off to the infamous Holstein’s Ice Cream Parlor.
It is not infamous because of its name - a name that has always made me believe I was a cow for going there or I would turn into one upon leaving. It is infamous because it is was the location used for the final scene in the final episode of The Sopranos.
Vegans don’t usually come within a few hundred yards of Holstein’s. It’s just too hard. But in walked Scout and she ordered two scoops of black raspberry ice cream with marshmallow and hot fudge. And she ate it. She loved it. She said it was delicious. All the more enjoyable because it was shared with Andrew (”the boyfriend”).
The next afternoon there was a big juicy cheeseburger and that evening, yet another black raspberry sundae. On Sunday morning, the delicious french toast at Raymond’s called out to her.
What amazed me most about this weekend carnivorous binge was that there was no angst, no drama and no guilt. If you know Scout as I do, her daily life typically includes at least one scoop of each. That was the real headline.
And so how can I possibly say that Scout is still a vegan? Because she considers herself a vegan who happened to have two sundaes, one cheeseburger and delicious french toast this weekend. Because she didn’t see the cheeseburger as a sign of weakness or failure. It was just a cheeseburger.
I can’t tell you whether Scout will remain a vegan for much longer (and no one should trust my prediction anyway) but I can tell you that she there is something quite healthy about our Scout. With or without the hummus. On this one, Scout is the grownup, hands down.
