Ben and Kit and I were in the car this morning.?Ǭ†Ben in the back seat reading the Guiness Book of World Records.?Ǭ†He is stunned that a person can eat 4 hot dogs (and buns) in under 3 minutes.?Ǭ†Kit is in her usual spot.?Ǭ†Riding shotgun and changing the channels on the radio.?Ǭ†Incessantly.?Ǭ†?Ǭ†it’s taking me some time but now I see the pattern.?Ǭ†She listens for about 10 seconds and then changes the channel, considering other options.?Ǭ†Maybe she goes back to the first song, maybe not.?Ǭ†BUT, if i utter the magic words “OH, THIS IS A GREAT SONG!” then Kit changes the channel immediately.?Ǭ†It’s not a spite thing.?Ǭ†At least I don’t think so.?Ǭ†It just means that song is now in a category of songs of no interest to a twelve year old gir.?Ǭ†I think that’s how it works.
But this morning, I thought Kit was especially thoughtful and caring.?Ǭ†Carole King’s “It’s Too Late” comes on the radio and my eyes light up.?Ǭ†I begin to sing along (usually forbidden for a grownup to sing along to a song on the radio while in the company of pre-teen or teenage girls) and Kit even allows me to sing a few bars.?Ǭ†I stop singing and mention that Carole King and I have the same vocal range.?Ǭ†I’m feeling pretty good.?Ǭ†?Ǭ†Maybe we are bonding over this music, I think.
Then without a shard of sarcasm, Kit inquires -?Ǭ†“So this music is supposed to be pretty, right?”
I think I encouraged Kit to change the channel and turned my attention back to Ben.?Ǭ†?Ǭ†“A pint of beer in 1.6 seconds??Ǭ†Can you imagine the burp you’d have?” ?Ǭ†Excellent.?Ǭ†A conversation that was nearly impossible to take personally….
