Joan is definitely the grownup. At least for now.

Teenage Drinking

Poor Scout. She thinks she made a strong argument that parents should let underage teens drink ‘safely’ in their homes.. We’ve gotten a lot of feedback and I clearly have the lead in the maturity category. Here’s some of what we have heard.

I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t know ?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ my parents didn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t give us a safe place to drink, and I didn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t explode, or implode, or any kind of plode at all, when I went off to college. And I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢d had less experience with alcohol than it sounds like Scout?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s had. I have to side with Joan on this one: knowing under-agers are drinking in your home opens you up to liability you don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t want to deal with.

This brings back some scary memories. But first, what does Scout mean about the people next door being 55 with dogs? And creepy? I am 54 with a dog. Regarding the drinking issue – we learned that even if your whole family is in Long Island and some kid drinks in your backyard and has an accident, you will be liable. After months of arguing, we told our kid no drinking. Then we would comb the bushes at the edge of the yard to round up the pre-party hidden beer and rum. Throughout the winter, rogue cans of beer would periodically freeze and explode in the backyard. These were the cans that my kid’s friends or his parents didn’t find. We tried the “give us your keys if you’ve had too much” routine, but it never worked. If Scout wants to practice drinking before college, she should do so with you and your partner in your house at dinner. Not socializing with her friends. Too risky.

To be fair, Scout did find someone in her corner.

My parents didn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t offer us a safe place at all. I often wonder whether some of my reckless and unsafe adventurism could have been lessened with open dialogue and proper guidance or roll modelling during my teen years. Miraculously, things did turn out all right in the end.
