Season Finales…

Two important things you need to know about our family. (1) We like to eat. As a subset of that, we like to cook, we like to feed people. (2) We are unapologetic about our love for television. I could claim that it is becuase my partner Eileen and I both have television backgrounds. Eileen claims she HAS to watch these shows. While there is some truth to that, Eileen just loves watching tv. And that gene has clearly been passed on.

These last few days we watched a whole host of season finales, two of which were for shows we have never watched this season. I learned that you really don’t have to watch much of the season in order to really savor the finale. This was especially true of The Bachelor: Officer and a Gentleman. Am I scaring you? Or are YOU TOO a closet viewer of this horrifying show?

Well,I don’t know about horrifying. Twelve year old Ben was in the den watching the finale of Heroes where there is a character who eats the brains of other characters. That strikes me as slightly more horrifying than a show about a guy who hooks up with mulitple women to find a dreamgirl. On national television. Now that I’ve written that, I’m not sure which one is more horrifying.

Oh, I know what is more horrifying. That Eileen can begin weeping when the bachelor selects the woman WE think is the best one (Tessa, not Bevin). I much preferred Scout’ hilarious imitation of the whiny loser in the limo heading home. Also, I’d like to point out here that I guessed right about who the bachelor selected. Eileen thought the bachelor was shallow and would go with the ‘hotter’ one. A guy who agrees to be ABC’s Bachelor – shallow? I don’t know how she could jump to such a conclusion….

Then there was Dancing with the Stars. I learned so much from Eileen while we watched this together. She was rooting for Joey Fatone. I didn’t even know who Joey was. I did recognize Apollo 13. Or maybe it’s Apollo Ono. I naively asked Eileen if she was rooting for someone. I should know better. She always has a favorite. She said “Joey has to win. He’s old and fat.” She continued. “Besides, if that jerk Justin Timberlake hadn’t left to start a solo career, Joey would still be famous.” I did not realize she had all this Justin Timberlake anger. Whoa. P.S. Eileen handled Joey’s defeat to Apollo 13 with grace and dignity.

And last night the American Idol finale. Eileen and I are the only ones left in our house that continue to be addicted. The two of us and a gazillion 3rd grade girls who vote religiously each and every week. Just three words about this finale. Melinda was robbed.

It’s just that time of year. Season finale time. Here at our house too. Scout graduates from high school 30 days from today. Her high school season has been a comedy and a drama. There are times she was robbed but no one ever tried to eat her brain. And she has not once, not ever, been shallow. High school graduation… That is a season finale we won’t miss.
